Grammaire

Les Participes Passés

We already know that with to BE, the participe agrees with the subject' s gender and number as with:

Ma mère est enchantée
Ils sont enchantés
Elles sont enchantées

With to HAVE, the participe only agrees with the direct complement when it is placed before it. The auxiliairies have and be plus the participle form the French Passé Composé, which is the past perfect in English.

J'ai loué une voiture
La voiture que j'ai louée est blanche.

What did I hired? a car. The car being placed before 'ai' and being feminine 'loué' must take an e that is 'louée'
